This morning, I was made aware that Wayne Enterprises, and I’m not making that up, is selling Holy Drinking Water.Â
At first, I just thought that a Christian company was selling water–to give “a cup of cold water in Jesus name.” Then, I saw the website.
My first thought was that it was some scam to sell a $2 bottle of water. But, I now think that these people are really serious. And serious in this case is quite alarming, yet, predictable.
I saw in the site that:
Our water is blessed into holy water by hands of God. By hands of God, we mean a priest, churchman, clergyman, cleric, curate, divine, ecclesiastic, elder, father, friar, holy man, lama, monk, padre, pontiff, preacher, rabbi, rector, sky pilot, or vicar.
Our future goal is to have a clergy from every faith bless each bottle of Holy Drinking Waterâ„¢.
I was instantly reminded of 1 Corinthians 8:
1Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. 3But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
4Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” 5For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”— 6yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
7However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. (1 Co. 8, ESV)
There is so much in this passage–I decided to post it all here.
Throughout out my life, Sunday School teachers and Preachers alike have taught this passage as not to apply literally to us. They would say something like; “Now, we don’t have people around us that sacrifice food to idols…” Then, they would continue with the “But, if it causes your brother to stumble” rule for Christian Behavior.
But, now–the Wayne Enterprises is actually pouring, packaging, and sending food sacrificed to idols. Ok, so it is not food–it is water. Have you ever heard of “drink offerings?” (see Leviticus 23:18)Â
And you may say that it is not sacrificed to idols. Let me remind you that the definition of idol is “false god.” Anything that is blessed by a priest of another religion, is presenting something that is said to have religious power–is just that…a sacrifice to the idol.
Now, before, I get myself into some trouble. I want to explain something and make it very clear. I respect the right of all people to follow the god they believe in. It is my duty as a US Army Chaplain to ensure the free exercise of religion in my Battalion and throughout the Army if I need to. I am very proud to do that. But, at the same time, I must hold true to my beliefs. I believe any god that is not Jesus Christ is false. What do expect me to believe? If I were Muslim, I would believe that Allah was the one true god. That is simple for me to understand. If you believe something to be true, say it.
The biggest problem with this Holy Drinking Water is that it makes all faiths equal before God–which, I believe to be the true God, and “No one comes to the Father” except through Christ. (John 14:6, ESV) The problem stems from the ungodly belief that all roads lead to God–and as long as there is somebody praying to some god then all will be…well, blessed. That is absolute heresy.
